Survey: Why do ppl from New Zealand call themselves Kiwi?

My fiance is from New Zealand and they refer to themselves as KIWI? Why, I ask them and they just mess around with me. I asked my future father and law and said it was only my fiance because he is fruity! Can someone please enlighten be because I wanna know so they can stop using it as a punch line with me? Thanks!
