Knights Templar are they Free Masons?

hey everyone lol, i just wanted to know whether the knights templar are related to the free masons? or are the free masons modern day knights templar, just altered their name for secrecy reasons? and are the knights templar kind and just knights or were they something to do with this other group i've just heard about something called illuminati who are supposed to be really evil?, what did the knights templar do so may years ago e.g their profession i did hear somewhere though that in those times they were known as kind of the boogie men of that time period lol, i'm just asking this because my dads part of the free masons and i think he's a few ranks up too i think his rank/title thingy is ''Master Mason'' and when i put mason after master that's not just because he's in the masons lol, mason is his last name lol
